The making of a warm, snuggly house May 24, 2010

Yesterday I noticed that J had nestled Leopold under the bathroom door to stop the draft coming though.

Leopold looked rather uncomfortable with his tail bent at an unnatural angle.  Also, upon further inspection I found that he was a little thin for that door, and we would be better with something there that was a bit fatter.

I got to work on the sewing machine and whipped up something more suitable for the door.  He’s not a snake you see, more of a slug.

He’s doing an excellent job keeping the cold drafts out of our bedroom, and I can’t help but giggle each time I pass him on the way to the bathroom.

He’s made out of a piece of sample wool I picked up from Reverse Garbage, and stuffed with Polyfil.  What do you think we should name him?  Suggestions welcome…

Yesterday I kissed and hugged my Mother goodbye, and watched as the cab she was in pulled away from the curb and headed to the airport.  It is always to special to have her visit, but so bittersweet when she has to leave again.  You see, she’s a special person my Mum.  She’s funny, and silly, and couldn’t care less what people think about her.  She’s creative, but doesn’t know it.  She has a killer sweet tooth.  She makes me feel safe, and warm, and loved.  And she makes me giggle like crazy.  I love that.  I love my Mum.

We did our best to blend in with the Ladies who Lunch crowd.  I think we looked like frauds, but that’s ok with me.

We ate plenty of cake.  An absolute necessity when Mum is around.  This is a little Lemon Polenta cake from the lady at the Saturday markets in Kings Cross.  Delicious.

We caught the bus to Balmain and ate lunch, and too much cake at Adriano Zumbo Cafe.  This one is called Ginger.  Incredible!  Go there, eat this.  Be sure to share, it’s a monster.

There was plenty of sugar-induced giggling going on

We ate at the ever impressive Cafe Sopra in Potts Point

Zucchini Flowers stuffed with 5 italian cheeses.  Perfect every time.

The Jerusalem Artichoke, Broad Bean and Swimmer Crab Soup is to die for.  Perfect in every way.  I do pity the poor kitchen hand who has to peel all those broad beans each day though.

Mum also helped me service my sewing machine, purchased a bunch of my soap, and took home Webley the Whale and Enid the draft snake.

It was a very special week indeed, and I’m so glad we had it all to ourselves.  Till next time!

I love it when you write a ‘To Do’ list, and you get to the end of your work week and everything has a nice little tick next to it.

I have to say that it helps if one of the things on your list is ‘sew eyes on door snakes’.

This weekend I’ll be at the Surry Hills Markets selling, among other things, these sweet little whale softies.  If you’re in Sydney this weekend come and visit me!

I’ll also be selling my handmade soaps, jams, draft snakes, and even some handmade picnic blankets.  Wish me luck!

Miss Maree placed an order with me for four custom-designed draft snakes for Christmas.  One for each of her brothers and their families, and one for her Mum.

Would you like to meet the family?

This is Florence!

Likes: Fairy floss, flourescent felt pens and flavoured fudge

Dislikes: Foul smells, figs and feral cats

And this is Herbert!

Likes: Hemingway, hummingbirds and hotdogs

Dislikes: Hermits, hunting and having to hurry

And this is Hunter!

Likes: haggling, habaneros and hula hoops

Dislikes: haggis, Halloween and housekeeping

And lastly, meet Cordelia!

Likes: Cordial, crumpets and cat naps

Dislikes: Car racing, cabbage and cellphones

Maree picked the family up last night.  She said that if she didn’t already have lilith she’d have snake-envy for Florence!

I’m redefining industrious here at casa craftyllama.

These are my homemade soaps all packaged up and ready to go.  I’ve wrapped about 12, and have another 50 or so to go.  It’s fiddly work with just one pair of hands, but I’ve finally got the hang of it.  No teeth involved.

Speaking of teeth, the Endodontist says I need to have my root canal redone.  How lovely.

I’ve made about 50 jars of homemade jam.

I’ve candied around 1 kilogram of organic orange peel.

Currants, raising and said peel are soaking away in Brandy for my Christmas Fruit Mince Pies.

Tomorrow, I’m starting on my 4 custom-ordered draft snakes.

So, yeah, you could say i’m a little busy.  An excited, happy, purposeful busy.  I’m so glad I left my job.

PS – our new camera has arrived, so expect the photography on this blog to improve dramatically in the next while.  Woop!

Meet Harriet.

PA010008

Harriet is a door snake.

She keeps you toasty warm by staying close to the door and keeping drafts out.  She’s also very useful if your city happens to have a dust storm.

She likes:  boys, new stockings and peanuts.

She dislikes:  dust storms, things that bite and sneezing.

She’s made from completely recycled materials.

She’s now in the craftyllama etsy store.  For now, she’s keeping guard at our front door, making me laugh every time I walk past.
