Today is my lovely boyfriend’s 30th birthday, so I packed a picnic and met him in The Domain for lunch.

Dress:  This dress is new to me as of Saturday.  It was donated to the Frock swap by my friend Virginia.  It’s a very fine, soft fabric that drapes beautifully.  The top is a big big for me so I’ve improvised by pinning it together with one of my Nana’s brooches.
Belt:  A cheap leather imitation purple tie belt, picked up from some chain store in the specials bin ages ago.  The belt was actually much higher when I left the house, but after a rather rigorous cycle around town it’s made it’s way down to my hips.  It looks much better up higher, but I’m sure you get the idea.

Today was lovely and warm, and I confess I stayed home in shorts and a tshirt all day.  I had a full day of making, cleaning and tidying at home, and didn’t get a chance to frock up until the Mr got home.  A perfect excuse for taking me out to dinner was that I needed to wear my dress and get a photo – yay!

Tomorrow I’m hosting my Frocktober fund raising afternoon tea and frock swap.  I’m very much looking forward to seeing all my lovely lady friends for an afternoon of fun times!

Dress:  Nicola Finetti zip up LBD.  I love this dress.  It always makes me feel great when I wear it.  Check out last year’s Frocktober photo for the dress sans cardigan.
Cardigan:  Gorman – given to me by a very thoughtful friend for my birthday this year.  You can’t see in this photo but it has little stars all over it.  Cute!

Today it’s a beautiful 25 degrees here in Sydney!  I headed out at lunchtime to meet my Mr for lunch in the domain.  It was lovely riding my bike in the sunshine, in my dress.  It feels like it’s been a very long time since I’ve done that.  Yay for Frocks on bikes!

Dress:  Vintage, from a store on Crown St in Surry Hills.  It’s so very pretty and really comfortable.  I love this dress so!
Bike:  From Sydney Vintage Bikes, just in case you’re interested.  We have so much fun together riding about town.

I’m 1 week in to my 4 week challenge and I have a confession to make.  This photo is from last night!

I’ve been busily making soap and jam today and haven’t bothered to get my frock on.  Oops!  I am wearing a skirt though, so that kind of counts doesn’t it?  I kind of figure that since I wore two dresses yesterday I could get away with not wearing one today!

Dress:  Vintage, a gift to myself for my 30th birthday.  From Zoo Clothing in Surry Hills.

Our lovely friends Fiona and Tarek recently got engaged, and had an party yesterday afternoon to celebrate.

We took along a little engagement present of some of my handmade napkins.

The fabric I used came from an estate sale that I went to recently.  I’m guessing it’s probably from the late 60’s?  It’s an amazing cotton print, the purple watermelon is so cool.  I used an old sheet to back these napkins – that way they’re double-sided and they’ll last for ages.

Fabric napkins are perfect for picnics, dinner parties, and everyday use.  We use fabric napkins all the time at home- we just love them.

Congratulation Fiona and Tarek!  We’re so very happy for you both!

I had been on the look out for places to eat and drink while we were in Melbourne when I came across this blog post by Pip from Meet Me At Mikes.  Turns out, this sweet little cafe is just around the corner from her store, so it worked in well with our shopping plans.  The first day we just dropped by for a coffee, and the second day we stayed and had the most delicious lunch.  Highly recommended if you’re in the Fitzroy area.

Josephine had the Ropa Vieja (Old Clothes beef) – $11.50

A lovely slow cooked beef dish, served on a crispy arepa.  The menu says that this is an old Cuban recipe.

This was really delicious, especially with the guacamole and salsa that was provided to serve with it.

I ordered the Arepa con Huevo – $9.50

A delicious combination of soft scrambled free range eggs, with spring onions and tomatoes.  Served on a crispy Arepa.

The combination of crispy hot arepa, and soft scrambled eggs was just wonderful.  I would be eating this all the time if I lived in Fitzroy.

After my birthday Josephine and I headed down to Melbourne for a few days.  It was my first visit, so we had plenty of exploring to do.

It was very cold and rainy, so we didn’t get to venture out and about as we would have liked.  Mostly we found nice places to eat and drink, and did a spot of shopping.  I’ll show you what I bought for myself in another post I think!

We checked out Meet Me At Mikes in Fitzroy.  I’ve been following Pip’s blog and twitter feed for some time now, so it was very exciting to go to her store.  She wasn’t there the day we went, but we were served by her lovely daughter Rin.  Josephine and I both found ourselves cheap little summer skirts – yay!

This is all the graffiti we managed to photograph due to it being so wet and cold.  I’d like to go back another time and spend some time photographing more of the alleys and laneways.

Great coffee at Sonido on Gerturude St.

A tasty lunch of Arepas at Cruzao Arepa Bar, Brunswick Street.

On our last day we headed out to St Kilda to check out the famed cake shops and ‘beach’.  I loved this old theatre.  I think it’s beautiful.

We shared a slice of the famous plum cake at the Monarch Cake Shop, St Kilda

Back to Sonido for another coffee!

Just before we left for our flight home we headed to Hwaro Korean BBQ for a few beers and snacks.

More photos from our trip are on my Flickr page.

Yesterday I kissed and hugged my Mother goodbye, and watched as the cab she was in pulled away from the curb and headed to the airport.  It is always to special to have her visit, but so bittersweet when she has to leave again.  You see, she’s a special person my Mum.  She’s funny, and silly, and couldn’t care less what people think about her.  She’s creative, but doesn’t know it.  She has a killer sweet tooth.  She makes me feel safe, and warm, and loved.  And she makes me giggle like crazy.  I love that.  I love my Mum.

We did our best to blend in with the Ladies who Lunch crowd.  I think we looked like frauds, but that’s ok with me.

We ate plenty of cake.  An absolute necessity when Mum is around.  This is a little Lemon Polenta cake from the lady at the Saturday markets in Kings Cross.  Delicious.

We caught the bus to Balmain and ate lunch, and too much cake at Adriano Zumbo Cafe.  This one is called Ginger.  Incredible!  Go there, eat this.  Be sure to share, it’s a monster.

There was plenty of sugar-induced giggling going on

We ate at the ever impressive Cafe Sopra in Potts Point

Zucchini Flowers stuffed with 5 italian cheeses.  Perfect every time.

The Jerusalem Artichoke, Broad Bean and Swimmer Crab Soup is to die for.  Perfect in every way.  I do pity the poor kitchen hand who has to peel all those broad beans each day though.

Mum also helped me service my sewing machine, purchased a bunch of my soap, and took home Webley the Whale and Enid the draft snake.

It was a very special week indeed, and I’m so glad we had it all to ourselves.  Till next time!

Today’s not just Frocktober day 26 – it’s also Joh’s birthday!  Happy Birthday honey!!  We met for a wonderful long lunch at the excellent Rockpool Bar and Grill.

Today’s beaufiful silk frock was a birthday gift from Joh several years ago.  It came from Misery Boutique in Auckland, which has sadly now closed.  It’s such a shame because her dresses were oh so lovely.

I love the shape of the sleeves, they’re just the sweetest.

Yay!  I just found out today that i’ve raised $105 for the Australian Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation so far.  Keep it coming!!

Today’s Frocktober frock is my lovely floaty summer Gorman dress.  Gorman are a Melbourne label, who have a store here in Sydney, but ironically I actually got this dress in Auckland one year in winter.  And it was raining!  The dress itself is cotton and all of the ties are silk.  I’ve tied all the shoulder pieces behind my neck for a different look today, it’s supposed to have them done up on your shoulders as big bows, but I’m not really into that look.

It’s a beautiful day in Sydney today, 25 degrees and sunny.  I took my lunch and ate it in the park in the sun.  Lovely!  It’s still pretty windy though, and I had a few near misses with the wind picking up the bottom of my skirt.  Somehow this frock doesn’t look so elegant when I’m walking along holding most of the skirt in one hand  :)
