Hi there,

Sorry for the absence from this blog of late – I’ve been super busy with my business, planning a trip overseas, and packing up our house for a move.  Many exciting things are happening here at Chez Craftyllama right now!

I’m just popping in here to let you know that there’s currently a giveaway happening where you have the chance to win some of my Saponify goodies, plus a whole lot of awesome stationery made by my super talented friends Rosa-may and Stella from The Frank and Dean Co. Ltd.

You might like to click here to see what’s on offer, and how to go about getting yourself into the draw.  Entries close on April 7th, so there’s still plenty of time to enter.

I hope everyone is having a fantastic week!

Rosa-May wanted to know what I wanted for my birthday this year, and I asked her to draw something for me.

I cried when I opened this on the night.  So special.

I sanded back an old blue frame and repainted it brown last week.  I love it!

(In case you’re wondering, it’s supposed to be the Mr and I).  So sweet!

After my birthday Josephine and I headed down to Melbourne for a few days.  It was my first visit, so we had plenty of exploring to do.

It was very cold and rainy, so we didn’t get to venture out and about as we would have liked.  Mostly we found nice places to eat and drink, and did a spot of shopping.  I’ll show you what I bought for myself in another post I think!

We checked out Meet Me At Mikes in Fitzroy.  I’ve been following Pip’s blog and twitter feed for some time now, so it was very exciting to go to her store.  She wasn’t there the day we went, but we were served by her lovely daughter Rin.  Josephine and I both found ourselves cheap little summer skirts – yay!

This is all the graffiti we managed to photograph due to it being so wet and cold.  I’d like to go back another time and spend some time photographing more of the alleys and laneways.

Great coffee at Sonido on Gerturude St.

A tasty lunch of Arepas at Cruzao Arepa Bar, Brunswick Street.

On our last day we headed out to St Kilda to check out the famed cake shops and ‘beach’.  I loved this old theatre.  I think it’s beautiful.

We shared a slice of the famous plum cake at the Monarch Cake Shop, St Kilda

Back to Sonido for another coffee!

Just before we left for our flight home we headed to Hwaro Korean BBQ for a few beers and snacks.

More photos from our trip are on my Flickr page.

My dear friend Rosa-May is a very talented artist and photographer.  Right now she’s running a giveaway on her beautiful blog, and I think you should head over there and check it out.

She and her sister Stella also have a store full of beautiful illustrated stationary.  I highly recommend you head over there and stock up on their beautiful things.  It would make me so happy if you supported my sweet friends!

The giveaway will be drawn this coming Friday, the 6th of August.  That, my friends, is my birthday!  Go there, enter her giveaway and win something.  I dare you!

Mexican Wrestler embroidered boxing hand wraps bag July 12, 2010

I had the sewing machine out yesterday, so I decided to finally finish something I started months ago.  A bag to keep our boxing hand wraps in.

I picked up Sublime Stitching, Craft Pad by Jenny Hart last year from Ariel Books last year.

I used her transfer as a guide, and embroidered these Mexican Wrestlers onto an old pillowcase.

The pillowcase wasn’t great for keeping the wraps in though, they kept falling out.

What it really needed was to be turned into a bag.  I cut the pillowcase to make it smaller, and sewed a drawstring into the top of it.  Now the wraps all sit happily in the bag, hanging off a hook in the laundry.  No more last second rushing around the house trying to find a set of wraps!

I’ve been indecisive for some time about how to brand and package my soaps for Saponify.  After much discussion with friends, customers and family I feel like I have in my head a clear idea and direction for what I want.  I want my soap to look like what they are.  Handmade.  Rustic.  Natural.  Covering them up with excessive packaging goes against what I want for Saponify and also what I want for this planet.  Yesterday I wandered into the most beautiful store called David Met Nicole.  I just wanted to stay in the store all day, poring over their collection of vintage stamps.  The store is tiny, but filled to the brim with exciting treasures.  The sales assistant was so lovely, and helped me to find just the right S for my soaps.  It’s a very old letterpress piece, I think that it was from the 1950’s but can’t be sure.

So, what do you think of the new look?  Do you love it or do you loathe it?

These little rubber stamps are teaching stamps from schools.  How great is that!  I’m going to use them on my notes to customers.  I need to find ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ stamps next.

Comments appreciated.

I love it when you write a ‘To Do’ list, and you get to the end of your work week and everything has a nice little tick next to it.

I have to say that it helps if one of the things on your list is ‘sew eyes on door snakes’.

This weekend I’ll be at the Surry Hills Markets selling, among other things, these sweet little whale softies.  If you’re in Sydney this weekend come and visit me!

I’ll also be selling my handmade soaps, jams, draft snakes, and even some handmade picnic blankets.  Wish me luck!
