Frocktober (day 20) October 20, 2010

Posted by Sarah in black, clothes, cotton, dress, fabric, frock, Frocktober, Fundraising, hand made, me.

Today I rode in to the city to drop off the Mr’s lunch for him.  It’s really great that I can just take a 10 minutes bike ride and be at his work.  So handy!

Today’s dress was a slightly silly choice for a bike ride unfortunately.  The split in the front of the dress makes it easy for my to walk, so it’s a necessary part of the dresses construction.  Unfortunately, when I ride my bike that split ends up at a most unladylike height.  I didn’t realise this before I left the house today.  If you noticed a girl riding her bike along William St today holding the handle bars with one hand, while the other hand was trying to conceal her modesty, it was me.  I’m thinking I may need to invest in some wonderfully 80’s bike shorts for these kinds of dresses.

Dress:  Tailor made for me in Vietnam a couple of years ago.  It’s cotton, and comfortable, and of course fits perfectly.  Made for me even.
Belt:  I picked this belt up from Zoo Clothing a few years back in their moving sale. I think I paid $4 for it.

In other news, I’m hosting a Frocktober Afternoon Tea and Frock Swap at my house this Saturday afternoon.  I’ve asked everyone attending to donate to the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation.  It should be a fun afternoon, and a great way to raise some much needed funds for the charity.  Yay!

If you’d like to sponsor me for my Frocktober challenge please head here to donate.  My registration number is 664999.

LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! The colour of your belt is just gorgeous – and I love the pairing with the black button-up dress. I can’t believe you only paid $4 for that!

And I have to confess I laughed out loud imagining the precarious bike ride you had today, hiding modesty while cycling :) Good luck for the ride home again!

I’m glad that I gave you an afternoon giggle :)
It was equal parts humiliating and hilarious!

Very nice.
The raison d’être for bike shorts is to wear under dresses as modesty preservers! Having dug mine out of a basket in the bottom of the closet the other day, I quickly learned that a) they worked brilliantly, and b) they had holes down the inseam. Can you still buy bike shorts anywhere?

Last year I had plenty of moments where I was zooming down the street thinking “gosh, if only I were wearing some kind of shorts under my dress I wouldn’t have to ride so awkwardly”
Hindsight’s a beautiful thing.
I imagine that they’re available at American Apparel, or Supre, or some such store. I’ll have to investigate if I’m to survive this summer without shocking everyone in my neighbourhood!
